Foley's Martial Arts Kickboxing program had it's beginnings with the advent of 2 or 3 events that came together in the late 1990's and early 2000's. One of our very accomplished Black belt students made a move to Ontario to pursue a career. That black belt was Elaine Fowler of CBS. On Advice from her coach Mike Sr. she sought out the top instructors she could find and was quickly 'discovered' and given a spot on the Canadian national team by her original Ontario coach Jim flood. She quickly started winning titles in national competitions, and then overseas in Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, South Africa, and so on. In a classic, 'Are there any more like you down on the farm?', Mike Foley Jr. competed for a spot on the Canadian team that was travelling to Thessaloniki Greece for the 2001 WPKA world championships. Both Mike Jr and Elaine won world titles at that event. Also traveling with that team from NL was Jason Foley, Sean Hunt and Melanie Haire. Incidentally those athletes were bronze medalist finishers at that event in the point fighting karate division. That team was coached by Muzammal Nawaz of Ontario.
Since the mid 2000's there has been government recognition of the sports of kickboxing in this country and in this province which has a PSO ( government recognition). Kickboxing has forged ahead nationally and provincially. There are now several NL athletes who have won in national competition. As well, local competition is starting to take hold here. In 2007 Mike Foley Sr. and the national head of Kickboxing Canada, Mr Nawaz, were able to successfully negotiate govt. recognition in the province of NL for the sport of kickboxing.
At Foley's Martial Arts there are a variety of kickboxing classes held each week, depending on your interest level. You can take part in competitive kickboxing or recreational. One important feature of our training is that all of our schools have CASK certified coaches trained in the proper techniques of kickboxing and in the maintenance of safe training procedures. Recreation classes are available for all fitness levels. For the competitor, competitive classes are available as well, with competitions scheduled throughout the year.
